Sarah Sessa

Sarah qualified from University College London and Middlesex Hospitals as a physiotherapist in 1995 and has wide experience in neurological and general rehabilitation, cancer, HIV and palliative care. She has worked as a senior Physiotherapist at University College London Hospitals leading the inpatient neuro and oncology rehab team, the National Hospital for Neurological Diseases, the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford on the brain injury unit and Oncology wards and St Margaret's Hospice, Taunton. In 2010 Sarah set up Pilates Therapy, a successful private Pilates and Physiotherapy pratice in Wiveliscombe, near Taunton. After moving in August 2012 she worked in Bristol at The Pilates Studio before setting up the Physio and Pilates Rehab centre in Clevedon with Karen.

She is a fully qualified Pilates instructor and completed an extensive training with the Pilates Studio in Taunton, in affiliation with Alan Herdman Pilates and is trained in matwork and machines. As well as teaching general matwork classes, Sarah has taught Pilates privately to muscians, riders, ante/post natal, post-surgical and many others, giving postural assessment, advice and appropriate Pilates programmes.

Sarah uses her Physiotherapy and Pilates skills to provide a highly effective treatment and exercise programme for a variety of conditions. She has seen great results, particuarly when using the machines such as the reformer and cadillac which work by using a gentle system of springs and pulleys. In this way movement can be aided or made more difficult depending on the needs of the client leading to improved alignment, flexibility and strength. Her passion is rehab of those with complex needs and those with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's, Stroke, Motor Neurone Disease and Multiple Sclerosis. Sarah has also worked extensively on oncology units and within hospices providing rehabilitation, maintaining awareness of the client's medical needs. All these groups can benefit greatly from work on the Pilates machines. Sarah combines this with physiotherapy techniques such as joint and soft tissue mobilisations, facilitation of normal movement and muscle tone and work on function, mobility and balance.

Sarah teaches anatomy, neurology and pathologies on the Pilates Teacher training course on the Pilates Teacher Training Programme. She has also completed her MSc (Inter-Professional Development) at the University of the West of England with a focus on anatomy, neuroscience, particularly Parkinson's and research.

Sarah Sessa MSc is a member of the: The Chartered Society of Physiotherapists (CSP), The Health Professions Council (HPC) , Australian Physiotherapy Pilates Institute (APPI) and Association of Physiotherapists with a special Interest in Neurology (ACPIN) and the Association of Physiotherapists in Parkinson's Disease Europe (APPDE) . She has also trained in the Bobath Technique of neurological rehabilitation.

Karen Pearce

After training at The Royal Ballet School Karen went on to have a career as a professional ballet dancer, dancing soloist and principle roles with Kiel Ballet Company, Germany and Northern Ballet Theatre in England. In the late 1990's, after moving to Somerset and having three children, she trained and qualified as a Pilates Instructor with Alan Herdman in London.

Karen set up a small Pilates studio in her house in Somerset in 1999 then, due to demand, quickly realised that she needed to expand. She is now the Founder and Director of The Pilates Studios (SW) Limited, runs studios in Taunton and Bristol and a Pilates Teacher Training Course in affiliation with Alan Herdman.

Karen had always been aware of the benefits of Pilates as a dancer although it had been used mainly as a source of rehabilitation following injury for herself and fellow dancers. It wasn't until she started to teach Pilates that she realized how beneficial it could be for all, whether fit, young, old or as a method of rehabilitation.

In her 15 years of teaching Pilates Karen has built a reputation with local physiotherapists, osteopaths and surgeons who regularly refer patients to her studios, together with teaching dancers, athletes and professional sports people such as members of Somerset County Cricket Club.
